Mustaine surgery made singing harder

Dave Mustaine finds singing more difficult after surgery on his neck and spine – and admits it was never his strong point in the first place.

The Megadeth mainman went under the knife last year after going through agony following a lifetime of energetic performance. But he says one of the worst parts was people accusing him of making it all up.

Mustaine tells Artisan News: “Probably the thing that was the most painful was the stuff people were saying, like I wasn’t really hurt and I was faking it. I was hurt.

“It’s one thing to have a bulging disc and have stuff fused together , but when they find broken pieces of bone in your spinal cord, that stuff causes pain.

“I wasn’t going to let it affect me or keep me going on stage. I probably hurt myself more by going out there like that. I don’t know if I’m just stubborn or what, but I was always taught the show must go on. I went up into the point where I had to be hospitalised – which is kind of rock’n’roll, if you think about it.”

He says doctors warned him he would struggle with his vocal delivery. “It’s been harder to sing and they said that would happen,” he reports. ” Which is sad, because I’ve already had… Singing is not my forte. I try my best to go it, btu I’m not a great singer.

“They told me it was going to get more difficult and I didn’t believe them. So now I’m dealing with it. When I go out and play I think about, ‘What about the persona that’s seeing us for the very first time?”
