Styx sue label over ‘phony business model’

Styx have sued A&M over unpaid royalties – and they’ve accused the record label of constructing a “phoney business model” to disguise how much the band should have been paid.

The veteran outfit allege that for every dollar they’ve received, they should actually have been given between two and five dollars.

TMZ reports that they want the courts to decide how much they should be paid in damages – and that it’s likely to be a huge amount. They released eight albums through A&M from 1975′s Equinox to 1990′s Edge Of The Century.

Styx filed paperwork in Los Angeles Country Superior Court last week using their corporate name, Gelderdisk LTD.

The claims involve payments relate to digital downloads and ringtones created from popular tracks including Lady, The Best Of TImes, Baby and Come Sail Away.

The band’s only remaining founding member is James ‘JY’ Young alongside long-time colleague Tommy Shaw, with bassist Chuck Panozzo playing a part-time role. They’re gearing up to tour the US with REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent. They released 15th studio album Big Bang Theory in 2005.
