Darkyra Black – “Dragon’s Tears”

When we think Female Fronted Symphonic Metal and Gothic Metal, our minds automatically think of the Ethereal Diva’s such as Tarja Turunen (ex Nightwish), Floor Jansen (Nightwish) and Simone Simons (Epica) and each year the number of carbon copy artists increases. Perhaps it’s time for a change. Perhaps the change is right here with DARKYRA BLACK!

DARKYRA BLACK’s unique vocal is far from predictable as she has a way of blending together all the different colors of her voice taking you on an emotional roller coaster unlike any other female artist. “Dragon Tears” is a concept album based on a Gothic interpretation of a geisha like tale that ends in tragedy. Love, loss, lust, betrayal and revenge. The music is a fine blend of symphonic metal, gothic metal, epic metal and progressive rock with elements of traditional pentatonic music and an overall cinematic feel.

It was through a company called Online Recording Masters in Athens that Darkyra found her counterparts for what was to become her very first self-titled project. George Boussounis, owner/music arranger formed the introduction to drummer Garry King (Jeff Beck, Joe Lynn Turner, Ian Parry) who was involved in his own uprising power metal project Achillea and not too long after the bond had seen three additional Achillea members join the ranks of the Darkyra Black team. Guitarist Paul Jupe, Keyboard Player, Fab Jablonski and Bass Player, Betovani Dinelli. Also set to make a guest appearance on the album is Icelandic virtuoso guitarist Thiago Trinsi (Seraphim). September 2013, Colin Haynes (Canada) entered the group with some additional bass on ‘Tears by Candlelight’ the first Darkyra Black single which led to Betovani taking on the role of an additional guitarist alongside Paul for the final album track ‘Never Know’ and future albums.

At times proggy and times symphonic and, of course, metally what you have here is an album that really will appeal to fans of Nightwish, Within Temptation and the like (and with my new found love of heavier stuff you can count me in) – but that word “cinematic” is perhaps the most significant. This truly paints pictures in the mind and that, if for no other reason, should be the only thing you need to know to make this an essential listen for fans of the afore mentioned bands. Rather wonderful!
