Def Leppard – ‘The Story So Far – The Best Of’

Closing out 2018, legendary British rock ‘n’ roll icons and 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame® nominees Def Leppard reveal a string of upcoming releases. The group assemble a brand new greatest hits collection entitled The Story So Far – The Best Of, arriving in stores and online 30thNovember 2018. It will be available in multiple configurations: a 2-CD set comprised of 35 tracks, 1-CD comprised of 17 tracks, 2LP vinyl, and digital. Among a blockbuster tracklisting loaded with timeless smashes, all four versions feature three new songs, including the official recording of the band’s recent fan favourite Depeche Mode cover “Personal Jesus”,  “Rock On (Remix)”, and the original holiday song “We All Need Christmas”. As a bonus for collectors, the first pressing vinyl copies of The Story So Far feature an exclusive 7” single of “Personal Jesus” (Rolling Stone claimed it “features a little more of the group’s signature giant vocals…and to great effect”) and “We All Need Christmas”. See full tracklisting below.

Additionally, Def Leppard shared “We All Need Christmas” as a standalone digital single. A delicate acoustic ballad, the track proves fireside-ready with its uplifting, hopeful spirit and sense of seasonal soul.

Is there anybody out their who really needs me to give my thoughts on songs that are so well known? There is? Bad luck, lovely readers, it’s not happenng. Why not? Well those lovely Leppard chaps have put together a series of vidseos giving us a little bit of background and history to some of the songs that make up this collection. Therefore, rather than try and think of something insightful I felt I’d let the band talk to you instead.

Yes you all cry, but what do you think? Well I havee to start by nailing my colours to the mast – I am a MASSIVE Def Leppard fan, so any review of mine will be from a positive persepective. Can they do anything wrong? Well, with a back catalogue as big as this and with such a history, their are some releases that I like less than others but, hey, I love this band. So, for a man whio has absolutely everything that can be grabbed by the band, is another “Best Of” really an essential purchase? I will be buying a copy and it will be the two disc cd edition.. Why? Well, having become a born again vinyl buyer I have decided to impose a few rules on my vinyl buying and one is, greatest hits on vinyl is a no-no. Plus, 35 tracks on a double CD that give a really good cross section of the history with a great running order make for a brilliant package. Get it on and not need to have the full collection with me in the car? Check. Not got a few days available to listen to the entire back catalogue, in release order ? Check – bung the CD on.

Def Leppard are the band that, 31 years ago were brought to my attention by my mum. She told me she’d seen this band on “Pebble Mill” (a UK TV magazine show at lunchtimes, for those of you not in the UK/too young) where the drummer had been involved in a horrendous accident and in her words “you will love the song they played”. She was completely correct – I did.
