Oliveri avoids jail over SWAT standoff

Former Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri will avoid jail for his SWAT standoff after reaching a plea bargain with prosecutors, TMZ reports.

He was arrested in July 2011 in his LA apartment after neighbours reported a hostage situation. He’d fallen out with his girlfriend then refused to let her leave the premises.

After two hours with armed police officers outside, he let her go; then, two hours later, surrendered himself. On searching the premises cops found a loaded high-power rifle and some drugs.

The incident led to his departure from Kyuss Lives, an offshoot band of Kyuss, which also featured QOTSA frontman Josh Homme, who’d fired him from that band in 2004.

Oliveri faced up to 15 years in jail if found guilty of the seven felonies on his charge sheet.

But the bassist’s lawyer, Freddy Sayeh, tells TMZ: “Mr Oliveri agreed to plead to one count of possession of cocaine and a dismissal of the remaining six counts.”

The plea bargain means he’ll be sentence to three years’ probation plus a year of anger management and 200 hours of community service.
