Nirvana Casting Notice for Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ Video Surfaces

Kurt-Cobain_Becoming-a-Father_HD_768x432-16x9Here we are now / Entertain us.” Those lyrics are familiar to just about anyone alive in the early ’90s and beyond, as Nirvana‘s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ became one of the biggest music videos of all time. But what about those who “entertained us” in the classic clip? The site All That Is Interesting has come across the casting call for the video, dating back to 1991.

The ad requesting extras for the shoot can be seen below. It asks for fans between the ages of 18 and 25 that could adopt a high school persona for the video, whether it be a preppy, a punk, a nerd or a jock.

Samuel Bayer directed the video, which was shot on a soundstage in Culver City, California. The video found the band playing for the variety of high school personalities at a gym. The students first appeared apathetic but later joined the band in the full-on chaotic mayhem of the finale. And the video also famously showed a shot of Kurt Cobain as a janitor, one of the many jobs he held before finding fame with Nirvana.
