Sunstorm – The Road to Hell

One of my favorite vocalists from my youth, the legendary Joe Lynn Turner, returns with his SUNSTORM project, and their fifth album, The Road To Hell”, on June 8 via Frontiers Music Srl. I’ve followed Joe Lynn Turner’s career from the start, with his early days with FANDANGO to his successful stints fronting RAINBOW (bringing back wonderful memories of one of best shows ive ever seen at Manchester Apollo on the Difficult to Cure Tour in 1981), and who can forget that amazing Odyssey album and tour with Yngwie Malmsteen in 1988 together with the Deep Purple album ‘Slaves & Masters’ in 1990, and through his solo career, the New Jersey-born singer has been at the top of his game for decades.

The first SUNSTORM album hails back to 2006, and then came “House of Dreams” in 2009, “Emotional Fire” (my personal favourite) in 2012, and the hard-edged “Edge Of Tomorrow” in 2016.

The new album, “The Road To Hell”, once again featuring production from HARDLINE’s genius Alessandro Del Vecchio and guitars by DGM’s Simone Mularoni, and continues on in the same hard rock direction that was started on ‘Edge of Tomorrow’. The album kicks off with ‘Only the Good will Survive’, which is great powerful opening track. Next up is the title track ‘The Road to Hell ” and for me the best tune on the album, soaring vocals, crunching guitars and great melodies, this track could have featured on the amazing ‘Emotional Fire ‘ opus , it’s simply a stunning song.  ‘On the Edge’ follows, which is a bit bland and in my opinion just doesn’t deliver like the first two tracks. The upbeat rocker ‘Blind the Sky’ gets things back on track and drives the album through to  ‘My Eyes on You’. The melodic ‘Future to Come’ offers up some great guitar work and trademark Joe Lynn Turner vocals which wouldn’t have sounded out-of-place on his masterpiece ‘Rescue You’ from 1985. The upbeat ‘Everywhere’ provides a big chorus and is another of the standout tracks on this offering. Joe Lynn Turner showcases his vocals to the max on ‘Resurrection’ ‘ and soulful harmony of ‘Calling’. This leads nicely into ‘State of the Heart’, which is simply a brilliant track melodic tune with top-notch guitars, and finally brings us up to the final track ‘Still Fighting’.

All in all in good album which offers great melodies, crunching guitars and flawless vocals as always by the legend that is Joe Lynn Turner, and is a great addition to any melodic rock lovers collection.

The story of SUNSTORM came about when, years ago, Turner got in touch with Frontiers’President Serafino Peruginoand after discussions between the two, the idea of unearthing some classic melodic rock gems to craft the definitive Joe Lynn Turner AOR album came about. This brought about the release of the first SUNSTORM album in 2006, and then came “House of Dreams”in 2009, “Emotional Fire”in 2012, and the definitively more hard rocking “Edge Of Tomorrow”in 2016.

The new album, “Road To Hell”, once again featuring production from Hardline’s Alessandro Del Vecchio and guitars by prog metaller titans DGM’s Simone Mularoni, continues in the same hard rock direction that was started on “Edge Of Tomorrow”and that JLT’s vocal talents shine so brightly in when performing this style.
