The Rolling Stones will be touring to celebrate their anniversary – but it’ll be to mark their 51st year, not their 50th.
Any hopes the Stones would be out on the road this year have now been dashed by Keith Richards.
Talking to Rolling Stone, the guitarist said of the situation: “Basically, we’re just not ready. I have a feeling that’s [2013] more realistic.”
One source, though, has told Rolling Stone there are concerns over Richards’ health. Which means that any tour might feature multiple nights at selected individual venues and no intense city-to-city schedules.
But despite the lack of touring action, there’s plenty going on with the band. It’s now been revealed that they got together in a London studio for a jam session last December. Former bassist Bill Wyman was involved, which has led to speculation he may rejoin the band 20 years after quitting. Meantime, the Stones will be moving forward with plans for a new studio album.
“We’ll just get the boys back together again then and maybe cut a side,” says Richards, endearingly referring to the old vinyl-album format. “I’ve got plenty in the locker here, but it’s not on tape.”
And there will also be a major documentary released in the autumn to commemorate the Stones’ 50th anniversary. It’s being directed by Brett Morgan and is to feature lots of unseen footage, as well as new interviews.
