Mustaine, Newsted consider Metallica jam on tour

mustaineNewstedFormer Metallica members Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted have discussed the possibility of jamming together on early material by the band.

The pair will be on the road together on the US Gigantour extravaganza during July – Mustaine with Megadeth and Newsted with his recently-formed self-titled outfit. They’re joined by Black Label Society, Device, Hellyeah and Death Division.

Bassist Newsted tells SkullsnBones.com: “There is a chance that Mustaine and I will bust out some old Metallica that he was a part of. it has been talked about.

“I’m willing to throw down Phantom Lord – actually, whatever he calls out, I’m gonna throw down.”

Megadeth were formed in 1983 after James Hetfield’s outfit fired Mustaine and brought in Kirk Hammett in his place. Newsted joined the thrash giants following the death of Cliff Burton in 1986 and quit in 2001.

Meanwhile, Metallica’s current bassist Robert Trujillo has said they’re still hoping to collaborate with Rick Rubin on their next album – but it will depend on when they decide to start production work.

He tells Muse: “Right now at this phase of the game, we’re concentrating on great riffs, potential songs and ideas. We’ve got to start getting our blueprints for songs together and make sure they’re the best possible — and then we see what producers are available.

“We made a great album with Rick the last time; that’s a strong possibility still. There are no guarantees in anything in this day and age, but if there is a great producer, who has something to bring to Metallica, we will investigate it.

In other Metallica news, Jakarta governor Joko Widodo has been told he won’t be allowed to keep the bass guitar given to him by Trujillo. The gift was investigated by Indonesia anti-corruption officials who enforce strict rules on the receiving of presents. They’ve decided the bass could be seen as a gratuity, with the requirement of Widodo offering something in return to Metallica’s Indonesia promoter.

Gratification Director Giri Supradiyono says the instrument can either be auctioned, giving Widodo the chance to buy it, or can be put on display in a museum, and the second option has been recommended. A photo of Trujillo presenting it to Widodo has been returned to the politician since it’s not regarded as having financial value.

Metallica have confirmed they’ll make just one appearance in Europe this year, as headliners of the Roskilde festival in Germany. It’s the first time in a decade the band have played there. Festival head of music Rikke Oxner says: “We listen to our audience, and this year they have been shouting for a large name to complete our high-quality, forward-thinking, broad music programme. We are thrilled to welcome back Lars Ulrich and his crew much earlier than expected.”
